Woman dies by suicide weeks after husband’s death in Moshi landfill tragedy
A 23-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at her home in Moshi-Borhadewadi on Wednesday evening, weeks after her husband was killed in the Moshi waste-depot collapse
Pune: A 23-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at her home in Moshi-Borhadewadi on Wednesday evening, weeks after her husband was among nine workers killed in the Moshi waste-depot collapse, police said on Thursday.
Her husband was killed on July 8 when a massive heap of waste collapsed onto an administrative building at the Moshi waste-to-energy project, trapping workers beneath the debris.
Police said the woman had been distressed following her husband’s death. Her maternal relatives, however, alleged that she was facing harassment from her in-laws and sought an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The relatives approached the Bhosari MIDC police following the incident and raised allegations about the treatment of the woman after her husband’s death. Police said the allegations would be examined as part of the inquiry.
The couple is survived by two young daughters.
NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Rohit Pawar expressed grief over the woman’s death in a post on X and renewed his demand for higher compensation for the families of workers killed in the incident.
Assistant commissioner of police Sudhakar Yadav said an accidental death report had been registered at the MIDC Bhosari police station.
Inspector Ganesh Jamdar said no suicide note had been found so far.
