Bangladesh have brought back wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan and allrounder Saif Hassan for next month’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE. The two players also feature in the 16-member squad that will face the Netherlands in a three-match T20I series starting August 30.
The selectors have left out Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Naim, both of whom played in Bangladesh’s 2-1 series win over Pakistan last month. Mehidy, who recently took over as Bangladesh’s ODI captain, has been named among the standbys along with Soumya Sarkar, Tanvir Islam and Hasan Mahmud. He was set to miss the Netherlands series for personal reasons but has also been overlooked for the Asia Cup after failing to make an impact in recent T20Is.
Naim too has been left out after struggling to carry his domestic form into international cricket. His returns of 32*, 3 and 10 against Pakistan, followed by an underwhelming outing with the Bangladesh A side in Darwin’s Top End T20s, didn’t help his case.
Nurul, on the other hand, has forced his way back with strong domestic and franchise performances. Although his last T20I was at the 2022 World Cup, where he managed just 41 runs in five innings, he revived his form in the 2024-25 season. Across the Bangladesh Premier League, National Cricket League and Global Super League, he piled up 513 runs at a strike rate of 132.90. He also led Rangpur Riders to the inaugural GSL title in 2024.
Saif Hassan has been in good touch as well, scoring a half-century against Pakistan Shaheens and 45 against the Melbourne Stars Academy in the Top End T20s. Nurul too contributed with a couple of thirties in the same competition.
Bangladesh will play the Netherlands on August 30, September 1 and September 3 before turning their focus to the Asia Cup. Their campaign begins against Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi on September 11.
