The debate around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is no longer about 'if', but 'when'. The BCCI selection committee is reportedly locked in a "serious debate" over the teenage prodigy ahead of India's upcoming T20I assignments against Ireland and England.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, Sooryavanshi, fresh off his record-breaking IPL 2026 season, appears closer than ever to making the giant leap. Ajit Agarkar and his colleagues are currently weighing whether to include the Rajasthan Royals star in India's upcoming T20I squad. While concerns remain over fast-tracking a teenager into international cricket, Sooryavanshi's extraordinary performances have made him impossible to ignore, setting up what could be one of the boldest selection calls in recent Indian cricket history.
"There has been considerable debate over whether it is appropriate to fast-track a 15-year-old into the national side so early, but it is understood that the selectors are seriously considering handing the Rajasthan Royals batter the national cap," the report cited.
Sooryavanshi, all of 15, wrapped up one of the most sensational IPL seasons of all time, scoring 776 runs at a breathtaking strike rate of 237.30 — numbers that earned him the Orange Cap and the Super Striker award. His record-scripting tally of 72 sixes — the most by a batter in a single IPL season — handed him the Most Sixes award, while he was also adjudged the Emerging Player and the Most Valuable Player of IPL 2026.
In the middle of his astonishing IPL campaign, Sooryavanshi had already been rewarded with a selection in the India A squad for the upcoming one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka, involving Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A later this month.
While experts and fans have long debated whether Sooryavanshi should feature in the Ireland T20Is later this month, his selection in the India A squad appeared to suggest that the tour was no longer under consideration. The one-day tournament in Sri Lanka concludes on June 21, while the Ireland series begins just five days later. Given the short turnaround, it seemed unlikely that the board would fly the youngster more than 9,000 kilometres for a brief two-match T20I assignment.
However, if the report is accurate and the selectors are seriously considering Sooryavanshi for the T20I setup sooner rather than later, it raises the possibility of him leaving the India A tour before its conclusion and linking up with the squad in Ireland. The alternative would be to wait until the England series. Yet, from a development perspective, Ireland may offer the ideal entry point — allowing the teenager to acclimatise to international cricket before facing significantly stronger opposition in England.
The selectors are reportedly set to meet during the India-Afghanistan one-off Test this weekend to finalise the squad for the Ireland T20Is and the five-match series in England.
