West Indies posted a competitive 295/7 in 50 overs after being asked to bat first ,building their innings around a superb 101 from Justin Greaves and two important supporting knocks from John Campbell (62) and Amir Jangoo (58). From 135/0, West Indies slipped to 198/5, courtesy Kuldeep Yadav.
Kuldeep was India's standout bowler with 4/40 from 10 overs, while Prasidh Krishna claimed 2/60 and Nitish Kumar Reddy 1/45.
50 for Greaves!!!
A boundary and the fifty comes up for Greaves. With that the 100 also comes up for West Indies. This as been one tough going for the home team.
WI - 103/0 (13.4)
The partnership continues
The India bowlers are still struggling to find away to break this partnership. The two West Indian openers are moving on steadily and rather comfortably.
WI - 95/0 (13)
Naman Dhir into the attack
The debutant has been handed the ball. Naman Dhir comes into the attack.
WI - 89/0 (11)
Big troubles for India
The two West Indies openers are really taking toll of the Indian bowlers. We are just at the end of the 10th over and the visitors have nearly brought up a 100 on the board.
WI - 85/0 (10)
Campbell launching into Jadeja
John Campbell has seen his opportunity with the left arm spinner into the attack. He is just launching the spinner into orbit.
WI - 78/0 (9)
Spin introduced into the attack
So, India bring in spin for the first time. Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack.
WI - 62/0 (8)
West Indies running away
Justin Greaves is looking in some touch. He is just flying away. Whatever he is touching is turning into a boundary. India need to find a way to get a break through.
WI - 60/0 (7)
50 comes up for West Indies
Great shot from Greaves!!! Four and the fifty comes up for West Indies. This is some start for the visitors.
WI - 52/0 (6.1)
Indian bowlers left without an answer
The two West Indies openers are batting brilliantly. They have kept the scoring rate going.
WI - 48/0 (6)
Rohit Sharma in action
Back of a good length and a bit of swing away from the batter. The batter looks to drive that on the up and gets an outside edge. The ball flies away to the left of the only slip fielder. Rohit Sharma puts in a full stretched dive but it is just out of his reach. The ball runs away to the third man fence for a boundary.
WI - 31/0 (3.4)
Gurnoor Brar into the attack
India moving away from the Nitish Reddy experiment. Gurnoor Brar comes into the attack.
West Indies off to a flier
A boundary to end the over and the West Indies have a brilliant start here. They are going 8 runs per over.
WI - 24/0 (3)
Huge over for West Indies
Not at all an ideal start for Nitish Kumar Reddy. He was looking for swing and ended up being too full. Four boundaries off it, 18 runs coming. Brilliant over for the visitors.
WI - 19/0 (2)
Not an ideal start
Greaves hits the second ball of Reddy for a boundary and that also is a no-ball. Nitish Reddy not off the blocks yet. And the free hit goes for a boundary. But it will take time to adjust with the new cherry.
WI - 11/0 (1.2)
Surprise!!! Surprise!!!
Nitish Reddy starts with the new ball alongside Krishna. This is proper grooming of the player in the all-rounder role.
End of the first over
Prasidh Krishna bowls the first over for India. Good decent lines and lengths. The two West Indies openers are looking to be careful with their start.
WI - 1/0 (1)
Time for anthems!
It's time for the national anthems. The Windies national anthem is played first. When it comes to India, the national song Vande Mataram is played first and it's then followed by the Indian national anthem.
What did Gill say at toss?
The Indian captain says that the upcoming few ODIs would be crucial for the Men in Blue as they prepare for the World Cup. “I think 20-odd matches to go before the World Cup starts, so I think this is the time to see what combination suits us the best and then give that combination as much time in the middle as possible,” Gill said in his chat with Ravi Shastri.
Here are the playing XIs
India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill(c), Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul(w), Naman Dhir, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.
West Indies: John Campbell, Justin Greaves, Keacy Carty, Shai Hope(w/c), Amir Jangoo, Jewel Andrew, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales.
India opt to bowl
Shubman Gill wins toss and opts to bowl. Naman Dhir is making his debut. No Mohammed Siraj as Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna are playing as the frontline pacers.
Toss in 10 minutes
The toss is just 10 minutes away. Let's see what playing XI the Men in Blue choose to field in the first ODI against the West Indies.
West Indies look to defy recent history
The West Indies last defeated India in an ODI series 20 years back in 2006, and their last series win on Indian soil came in 2022. The Windies look to defy history and better their record against the Men in Blue in the 50-over format.
India, too, hasn't been in good form in 2026, losing against New Zealand and England. Their only series this year came against Afghanistan.
What are the squads?
Some key players are unavailable for India due to the Asian Games. Here are the full squads of both India and the West Indies:
India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill(c), Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul(w), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Auqib Nabi, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Gurnoor Brar, Naman Dhir.
West Indies: John Campbell, Shai Hope(w/c), Keacy Carty, Sherfane Rutherford, Justin Greaves, Amir Jangoo, Matthew Forde, Roston Chase, Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph, Jewel Andrew, Vitel Lawes, Keemo Paul.
Where will live streaming be available?
The 1st ODI will be broadcast live on the Star Sports Network while the live streaming will be available on JioHotstar app and website. The live broadcast will begin at 1 PM IST.
Will Ruturaj Gaikwad play?
With Shreyas Iyer unavailable due to the Asian Games, a spot for number four slot has opened up. Ruturaj Gaikwad is the frontrunner to take the place but the management might also look to give Naman Dhir a chance as it is all about building towards the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gaikwad had slammed a ton in the series against South Africa but was dropped for the next assignment against New Zealand after Shreyas recovered from an injury.
