Rape, marriage promise broken, issuing threats, leaking pics: Allegations against IPL cricketer

Abishek Porel was arrested in West Bengal's Hooghly district on Tuesday, months after a medical student accused him of rape.

Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was arrested in West Bengal's Hooghly district on Tuesday, months after a medical student accused him of rape and torture in April. The arrest followed a July 14 Calcutta High Court order directing the police to arrest Porel and seize all his electronic devices. A police officer said the complainant, a third-year medical student, alleged Porel sexually assaulted and abused her, although he had promised to marry her after they first met in 2023.

In her petition in the high court, the woman alleged that Porel threatened to make photographs of their intimate moments public.

The West Bengal Police informed the court on July 14 that they seized a pen drive from Porel's residence, but he was at large. On Tuesday, Porel was arrested after an interrogation. "He has been taken to a state hospital for a mandatory medical check-up. He will be produced before a local court," said the police officer.

Porel has also played in the Bengal Pro T20 League and represented West Bengal.
