BCCI, on Tuesday, confirmed that India captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out from the second and final Test against Bangladesh starting Thursday in Mirpur with a thumb injury he suffered during the second ODI. This means that vice-captain KL Rahul will continue to lead the side in their quest to whitewash the hosts. The BCCI's medical team said Rohit will need more time to bat and field properly. The opener is likely to be available from the home series against Sri Lanka.
“Rohit is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team following his left thumb injury, which he sustained during the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka. The Medical Team is of the opinion that the injury needs some more time to heal completely before the Indian captain can bat and field with full intensity. He will continue his rehab and will not be available for the second and final Test against Bangladesh,” BCCI said in a release.
In another development, fast bowler Navdeep Saini, who was drafted into the squad after Mohammed Shami was ruled out, has suffered an abdominal muscle strain and has flown back home to report at the NCA in Bengaluru.
“Navdeep Saini is also ruled out of the second Test owing to an abdominal muscle strain. The fast bowler will now report to the NCA for further management of his injury,” BCCI added.
The selectors decided not to name a replacement for Saini as senior pro Jaydev Unadkat is already with the squad.
In Rohit's absence, young opener Shubman Gill did a fine job in the first Test, slamming his maiden Test century to help India register a 188-run win and take an unbeatable 1-0 lead in the two-match series. He will get another opportunity in the second Test to show his prowess.
It is unlikely that India will make any changes to their XI that featured three quality spin bowlers and two experienced pacers in Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. It was because India had the variety in their spin department with a left-arm spinner in Axar Patel, an off-spinner in R Ashwin and a left-arm wrist spinner in Kuldeep Yadav that they were able to bowl Bangladesh out in the second innings in Chattogram on a pitch that had shown very little signs of deterioration.
Conditions are likely to be quite similar in Mirpur and the KL Rahul-led side will look for another victory to stay in the race of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
