In the storied rivalry between India and England in Test cricket, several bowlers from both sides have endured long, gruelling spells where they conceded most runs in an innings. These figures came in matches where batters dominated, forcing bowlers to persist in challenging batting conditions. While these performances may look expensive on paper, they also show the bowler’s endurance, even when wickets were hard to come by. Here’s a look at some of the most runs conceded by bowlers in a single innings in Tests between India and England.

At the top of the list is India’s Bishan Singh Bedi, who conceded 226 runs in 64.2 overs at Lord’s in 1974. Despite the most runs conceded, Bedi claimed six wickets, showing remarkable ability over a long spell. His economy rate of 3.51 was reasonable considering the match situation, though India went on to lose the game.

Close behind is Vinoo Mankad, another Indian legend, who gave away 196 runs in the second innings of the 1952 Lord’s Test. Bowling 73 overs with 24 maidens, Mankad took five wickets at a tight economy of 2.68. It was a heroic effort in a match that India eventually lost.

From England’s side, legspinner Adil Rashid features prominently for conceding 192 runs in the second innings of the 2016 Mumbai Test. Rashid bowled 55.3 overs and picked up four wickets, but he was put under immense pressure by India’s batting lineup. India went on to win the match convincingly.

In the same series, offspinner Moeen Ali conceded 190 runs in 41 overs during the Chennai Test in December 2016. He managed to claim just one wicket as India piled on a huge total. Back to Indian bowlers, EAS Prasanna had a tough outing at Leeds in 1967, conceding 187 runs in 59 overs without taking a single wicket. Similarly, Manoj Prabhakar gave away 187 runs in 43 overs at Lord’s in 1990, managing only one wicket. Both performances came in losing causes.

Among more recent names, Ravichandran Ashwin conceded 183 runs in 52.3 overs at Eden Gardens in 2012. Though he took three wickets, England batted deep, and India lost that Test. Ravindra Jadeja also appears on the list for conceding 179 runs in 47 overs during the Oval Test in 2018, and taking three wickets.

England’s former pacer James Anderson makes the list too. In the Oval Test of 2007, he conceded 182 runs in 40 overs, though he picked four wickets. The match ended in a draw.

Dilip Doshi's 175 runs conceded at The Oval in 1982 and his four wickets helped India earn a hard-fought draw. He bowled 46 overs in that innings with admirable persistence.
