A 35-year-old Mumbai resident, who would specially fly down to the Capital allegedly to extort money from his unsuspecting targets in the garb of a female law enforcement agency officer, was arrested in south Delhi, police said on Tuesday.

Ravi Bhupinder Nath Verma, a resident of Navi Mumbai, would talk to his, usually female, victims in a female voice, claim he had received several complaints of harassment against a male member of the victim's family and demand money in return for 'settling the matter', said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south).

"Analysis of Verma's call detail records (CDR) has indicated that he had contacted more than 2,500 victims in the past six months in Delhi alone," DCP Sharma said. Verma was arrested following investigations into a complaint alleging that she had received a call from an unknown person who had claimed that a male member of her family had made obscene calls to them from her number and then molested her in February.

The victim was asked to deposit Rs 40,000 as a 'security deposit', police said.

"A part of his modus operandi was to seek a security amount for a brain mapping test and 'physical measurement'," DCP Sharma said.

According to police, Verma then summoned the victim to the AIIMS metro station to hand over the R25,000 from where he demanded that she accompany him till Gurgaon where her brother was apparently being interrogated.

"The complainant claimed she was molested en route Gurgaon. Verma was previously arrested in several similar cases," DCP Sharma added.
