Of the 11 districts, the northeastern part of the city, which includes areas such as Bhajanpura, Gokulpuri, Shahadara, Seelampur, Khajuri Khas, Welcome, etc., has seen the highest number of dwellers, the data said.

Not only among states, the population density of Delhi is also the highest among the Union Territories with Chandigarh following close behind in second place with a density of 9,252 persons per kilometre.

Delhi is spread over 1,483 kilometre square. Population density indicates the number of people living in an area per square kilometre.

Growth rate
But there is some good news as well. The rate of growth of population has come down significantly in the city — it has seen a fall of 20.96% (in a decade) from 47.02% in the last decade, indicating increasing awareness and success of the family planning programme.

Sex ratio
Good news also comes from the sex ratio front. It has seen an improvement with the provisional data revealing 821 females per 1,000 males in 2001 has increased to 866 per 1000 men in 2011. But sex ratio in the population aged below six years has seen a drop from 868 in 2001 to 866 this year.

The ratio of the population aged 7 years and above has risen commendably from 813 to 866 women per 1,000 men in 2011.

Literacy
Literacy rates have also risen by almost 5% in Delhi — from 81.8% in 2001 to 86.3% in 2011. Among women, it has seen a jump to 81% from 75% and among men it has risen to 91%, according to the latest census.
