Faridabad on high alert, section 144 imposed after Jat agitation threat

FARIDABAD: The industrial township of Faridabad has been put on high alert in the face of a threat by Jat leaders to launch a fresh agitation in various districts of Haryana from June 5.

Though Faridabad and adjoining areas did not witness any major untoward incident during the agitation in February but police conducted mock drill on Friday to check its preparedness. The administration also invoked Section 144 in the district.
“We conducted a mock drill on Friday at police lines to check preparedness for June 5. Adequate force is being deployed in the district as a precautionary measure,” commissioner of Faridabad police, Hanif Qureshi, said.
The drill focused on how to deal with a mob and ensure safety of people and public and private property. The step assumes significance in wake of the massive devastation and deaths during the previous agitation in Rohtak and Jhajjar area.
The police department has cancelled leaves of all officials, except emergency cases, till further orders.
A written communication has been sent to all concerned authorities.
Meanwhile, Haryana additional director general of police, Mohammad Akil, said that the police was fully geared up to meet any eventuality.
T he police and district administration would maintain law and order and safety of the people would be ensured. He said that individuals or groups found trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere directly or indirectly would invite stern action.
The Jat community is demanding reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the youth.
