The woman arrived in New Delhi from Australia on March 6 and was staying at a hotel in Dwarka, police said. She reportedly told the police that she knew the transport department employee, identified as one Ram Narendra Sharma alias Titu, for two years.

In her complaint, she has alleged that she was beaten up by Sharma, who also tried to rape her in the hotel room in Dwarka when she pressured him into marrying her.

Previously, the two had taken trips to Singapore, Australia and Jaipur, where Sharma allegedly had physical relations with her on the pretext of marriage, she said.

A complaint has been lodged at the Dwarka South police station.

The Dwarka Police sent the victim to a government hospital for a medical examination, which confirmed the attempt to rape. They lodged a complaint and arrested Sharma.

Sharma is reportedly posted as a head constable in the transport department and is already married. He was produced before a city court which sent him to judicial custody, said a police officer.

According to the police officer, the matter came to light on March 6, the day the victim landed in Delhi. That very day, Sharma hit her and tried to rape her.

"The woman told us that she came to India to convince Sharma to marry her as he had been ignoring her for a long time now despite all the promises of marriage. On March 6, the day she arrived, Sharma came to meet her at the hotel where an argument broke out between them," said the officer. Sharma got angry and began to hit her and tried to rape her.

During investigation, the officer said, it was learnt that the woman was married 16 years ago to a resident of Haryana's Sonepat. After getting married, they settled in New Zealand where her husband started a café and taxi business.

Sharma was an acquaintance of her husband and used to visit them in New Zealand. Since the victim was unhappy with her married life, the two became closer. The victim separated from her husband two years ago and settled down in Australia.

Sharma and she entered into a live-in relationship and he would stay with her whenever he came to visit her.
