A swirling row over nationalism at Delhi University singed social media on Tuesday with poet Javed Akhtar and grappler Yogeshwar Dutt wrestling it out on Twitter. (HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY)
Akhtar took the first shot, hitting out at the “hardly literate” Olympian for his comment criticising 20-year-old Gurmehar Kaur.
If a hardly literate player or a wrestler troll a pacifist daughter of a martyr its understandable but whats wrong with some educated folks— Javed Akhtar (@Javedakhtarjadu) February 28, 2017
The DU student has received alleged rape threats for her comments on last week’s violence at Ramjas College, when members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad allegedly thrashed teachers and students at a march.
Dutt reacted within minutes, using his status as a Bronze-medal winner at the London 2012 Olympics.
This was what Dutt had said in the morning about Kaur’s views .
Kaur’s views have polarized political and popular opinion around the issue with prominent ministers alleging she was being used as a political pawn and opposition leaders accusing the government of muzzling free speech.
