With Delhi University (DU) colleges holding dramatics fests over the next two months, the fest season is literally poised to kick off with a lot of drama. Until a few years ago, just like dance and music, dramatics used to be an integral part of the annual cultural fests of the colleges. Now, due to the growing popularity of dramatics societies, many colleges have started organising separate dramatics fests.

This annual theatre fest, which started in 2004, is organised by the dramatics society of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). The four day festival will feature Aahvan (a street play competition), Rangmanch (Hindi stage play contest) and Charades (an English stage play competition). The fest will also include Groove - a choreography competition.

“The idea is to promote theatre. Since the annual fest is an amalgamation of many events, we thought theatre has a potential to be a stand alone fest,” says Prateek Handa, executive organiser at the dramatics society.

The theatre fest also includes a host of other events such as Act and React, which will test the spontaneous acting skills of the actors, mimicry, Imagery - a script writing contest, I Me Myself - a monologue competition and Black ‘n’ White - a filmmaking competition. SRCC will be performing two English stage plays - Three Blind Mice and Studio Ruins, and a Hindi production - The Untitled.

When: January 16-19
Where: SRCC, North Campus
Timings: 10am onwards

Presented by Lakshya - the dramatics society of Kamala Nehru College, the festival will host competitive and fun events. The three day long fest is divided into four segments — a stage play competition called Arc Lights, a street play contest, a choreography competition and other events such as a parody-making contest and Phata Poster Nikala Trailer.

“The theatre culture in DU is so mutli-coloured that there should be a festival that celebrates different forms of theatre,” says Umang Sabharwal, student convenor of Lakshya.

When: January 6-7
Where: Kamala Nehru College, August Kranti Marg
Timings: 9.30am onwards

Other colleges in DU, such as Hindu, Ramjas and IP College for Women have not finalised the dates of their fests.

Other upcoming theatre fests
Kirdaar - the annual stage play festival by Abhivyakti of Indraprastha College for Women (February End)
Medina - dramatics fest by Ibtida of Hindu College (February End)
Mukhatib - annual dramatics fest by Shunya of Ramjas College (March End)
