In between the beautiful shots of food bowls or your fitness journey, Instagram has a little corner for the truly weird.

So, after hairy nails and eyebrow wigs, what’s the new trend hitting the social media site? Nose hair extensions. Yes, you read that right.

Nose hair extensions became a thing when Instagram user @gret_chen_chen posted a picture of herself with hair peeking out of her nose. She often posts quirky, bordering-on-the-bizarre photos on her Instagram handle and this was no exception.

And, of course, just like that a bizarre ‘beauty’ trend was born. YouTuber Taylor R, who vlogs about everything from carving pumpkins to fashion and style, posted a video on her channel showing how to DIY the trend. The video has been watched more than 113,000 times.

Other Instagram users jumped on the bandwagon, posting selfies with fake lashes doubling up as nostril hair.

This does not answer the pressing question: Why? Why, why, why? We clip and groom nostril hair and pretend they don’t exist at all, so why exactly would any one want to sport extensions?

The world is equally puzzled, but Instagrammable art knows no bounds. And when you really look at the photos, they don’t even look that gross.

The social media platform is at the forefront of the edgiest trends in makeup, beauty and fitness. Many, like contouring, are now so mainstream that they are part of every day makeup routines. Others, like meme makeup or squiggle lips, remain short-lived, fun experiments.

We’ll chalk up hairy nostrils to the latter category and live in hope.
