Losing weight is a challenge a lot of us struggle with. A 32-year-old Chinese photographer took up the daunting task and documented the six-month long process on social media. To make it easier, he roped in his family for getting back in shape.
Ding Guo Liang, who goes by the name Jesse, is a photographer and videographer from Xiamen in China.
The gruelling journey started on March 10, 2017, when Jesse’s parents moved in with him to help his wife during pregnancy and the initial stages of motherhood. Jesse noticed his father, Youwang Ding’s, beer belly - a result of alcoholism, depression and ill health - and encouraged him to join him.
“I wanted to help him get healthy again and feel better and thought doing it together would help keep my father motivated. It worked,” Jesse told Hindustan Times in an e-mail interview.
The family kicked off the routine with brisk walking and jogging, and soon started making trips to the gym. They tracked their progress by measuring their changing bodies every ten days.
Jesse says there were several instances where he wanted to give up. “At the beginning it was very hard. I maintained the encouragement and wouldn’t allow my family to give up.”
By September 20, the end of the 6-month mark, Jesse, who had started at 72kg, weighed 60kg. Jesse’s father, who weighed 85kg, came down to 63kg.
The family’s diet was simple - eating controlled portions of food and cutting out fat and sugar. “We didn’t follow a specific exercise routine, but stuck to whatever we liked.”
The family may have competed the 6-month goal, but they plan to maintain the healthy lifestyle.
