Oscars 2020 highlights: Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite wins Best Picture, Joaquin Phoenix wins Best Actor
Bong Joon Ho's Parasite made history, Brad Pitt won his first acting Oscar, Laura Dern collected best supporting actress and Joaquin Phoenix won the best actor Oscar at the 92nd Academy Awards.Bong's South Korean class satire took four big awards: best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best international film. All were the first Oscars for a Korean film. Bong and co-writer Han Jin Won became the first Asian writers to take the screenplay prize. Parasite became the first non-English language film to win best picture.As it has for much of awards season, Parasite appeared the favourite in the room. A standing ovation greeted Bong's win for international film. “I am ready to drink tonight,” said Bong to roars from the crowd. Janelle Monae opened the show entering a Mister Rogers set and singing A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. “I’m so proud to be standing here as a black queer artist telling stories," said Monae. "Happy Black History Month.”Two former Oscar hosts, Chris Rock and Steve Martin, dropped in to supply an opening monologue. Martin called it “an incredible demotion.” Martin noted that something was missing from this year's directing nominees. “Vaginas!" Best Picture - Parasite
Parasite made history, winning Best Picture in addition to three other Oscars -- Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Film.
True to its name, Parasite simply got under the skin of Oscar voters, attaching itself to the American awards season and, ultimately, to history. The win was a watershed moment for the Academy Awards, which has long been content to relegate international films to their own category.
9:45 am ISTBest Actress - Renee Zellweger, Judy
Renee Zellweger wins the Best Actress award for her performance as Judy Garland, in the biopic Judy. It marked the second Oscar victory in four nominations for Zellweger, 50, a Texas-born performer whose immersion in the role of Garland also earned Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA awards.
9:35 am ISTBest Actor - Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Actor Oscar, for his performance as Arthur Fleck in Joker. This is first Oscar and fourth nomination.
"I've been a scoundrel in my life, I've been selfish, I've been cruel at times, I've been hard to work with. I'm grateful so many of you in this room have given me a second chance," Phoenix said in accepting his award.
"When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric, he said: Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow," he said in concluding his speech tearfully to a standing ovation.
9:23 am ISTBest Director - Bong Joon-ho, Parasite
Bong Joon-ho wins the Best Director award for Parasite. Bong, 50, beat Hollywood veterans including Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino for his Korean language movie about the violent clash between haves and have-nots in contemporary Seoul.
In his acceptance remarks, Bong gave a shout-out to both directors.
"When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese's films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor. I never thought I would win," he said as the audience rose to its feet in applause.
"When people in the U.S. were not familiar with my film, Quentin always put my films on his list. He's here," Bong added. "Quentin, I love you!"
And then reprising a remark he made after winning, best international picture, he said: "I will drink until next morning. Thank you."
9:15 am ISTBest Original Song - Rocketman
Elton John wins his second Oscar, for the original son (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again, from Rocketman, a biopic on his life. John previously won for Can You Feel the Love Tonight, from The Lion King. This is his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin’s first Oscar.
“This Oscar is for Bernie,” Elton said in a post-win interview. “Without him, I’m nobody, He started the journey and we’re still together after 53 years. This film has taken 12 years, and in the end we got it made the right way. I’m so thrilled for Bernie because I love him so much.”
9:13 am ISTBest Original Score - Joker
Joker picks up its first Oscar. Hildur Guðnadóttir wins for Best Original Score Academy Award. Her score was played on set to help Joaquin Phoenix get into character.
8:55 am ISTBest International Feature - Parasite
Bong Joon-ho picked up his second Oscar for Parasite. The film became first South Korean film to be nominated and win the award. Bong received a standing ovation.
8:50 am ISTBest Makeup and Hairstyling - Bombshell
Ray Romano dropped an F-bomb while announcing Bombshell as the winner. Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan, and Vivian Baker are the winners.
8:45 am ISTBest Visual Effects - 1917
Guillaume Rocheron, Greg Butler, and Dominic Tuohy win 1917’s third Oscar of the show, for Best Visual Effects. Other nominees included The Lion King, Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
8:38 am ISTCynthia Erivo performs her Oscar-nominated track from Harriet
Cynthia Erivo earned the second standing ovation of the show, for her performance of her Oscar-nominated song from the film Harriet.

Donald Sylvester wins the Oscar for Best Sound Editing, for Ford v Ferrari. Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson pick up 1917’s first Oscar, for Best Sound Mixing.

Eminem performed his Oscar-winning track from 8 Mile, Lose Yourself, in a surprise performance that earned him a standing ovation.

Best Supporting Actress - Laura Dern
Laura Dern concludes her awards season sweep with an Oscar for her performance in Marriage Story. The daughter of acclaimed actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd had widely been considered a frontrunner in the category after winning both a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award last month for her performance.

Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert and Jeff Reichert win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for American Factory, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s company. Carol Dysinger and Elena Andreicheva won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject, for Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl).

Jacqueline Durran wins for Little Women. Durran won an Academy Award for her work on Anna Karenina (2012), and has been nominated seven times for the award.

Taika Waititi wins his first Oscar, for writing the political satire, Jojo Rabbit. The film is based on Christine Leunens’s book Caging Skies.
7:10 am ISTBest Original Screenplay - Parasite
Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Parasite, in the first upset of the evening.
6:55 am ISTBest Animated Feature - Toy Story 4, Best Animated Short - Hair Love
Toy Story 4 becomes the latest Pixar film to win the Oscar for Best Animated Film. Toy Story 3 also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Accepting the award, director Josh Cooley said “we hope your adventures with Woody and Buzz made growing up a little easier.” Toy Story 4 became the 10th Pixar Animation Studios project to take home the best animated feature trophy at the Academy Awards.
6:40 am ISTBest Supporting Actor - Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt wins the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. “This is for my kids,” Pitt said in his acceptance speech, also thanking director Quentin Tarantino and his co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio. "I'm a bit gobsmacked. I'm not one to look back, but this has made me do so,” he added. Pitt bested a field of former Oscar winners: Joe Pesci and Al Pacino for Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes) and Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood).

The Oscars kicked off in Hollywood Sunday with a musical medley by Janelle Monae and Billy Porter including dancing Jokers and the Mister Rogers theme song in a nod to the biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
