From being the world’s sexiest vampire for an entire generation of teenage girls, actor Robert Pattinson is now all set to become the Batman. According to Variety, he is in negotiations to play The Caped Crusader in Warner Bros’ upcoming film that will be directed by Matt Reeves. While an official confirmation is awaited, the report says Pattinson will shortly close the deal and is studio’s final choice. The film will begin pre-production later this year. Pattinson successfully managed to outgrow his role in the Twilight series with arthouse cinema. He has four films opening this year -- Claire Denis’ High Life, Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, Netflix’s The King and Waiting for the Barbarians. At 32, Pattinson will be the youngest actor to ever play Batman on the big screen. The superhero has previously been played on screen by Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck.Reeves, responsible for Planet of the Apes sequels, stepped in to direct Batman after Ben Affleck left the project in January 2017. He has been developing the project ever since. Affleck had confirmed that he was no longer Batman earlier this year. In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, Affleck had said, “I have decided - I tried to direct a version of it, worked with a really good screenwriter, but couldn’t come up with a version… couldn’t crack it. So I thought it was time to let someone else take a shot at it and they got some really good people.”Affleck played Bruce Wayne in two films--Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League--with a cameo in Suicide Squad. The films were badly received with critics ambivalent about the actor as the beloved hero.Reeves will also produce The Batman with Dylan Clark. It is set to release in June 25, 2021.
