While the government and the saffron camp have been quick to distance itself from the comments with the latter taking swift actions against Sharma and Jindal. In a statement, the BJP also said that it respects every religion and “strongly denounces the insult of any religious personalities of any religion”.

Both Sharma and Jindal have also apologised for their comments and said that their intention was not to hurt any religious sentiment. While Sharma said constant humiliation of Lord Shiva made her react “out of rage”, Jindal clarified that he was only asking a question and it does not mean he is against any religion.
India has responded to being lashed out, including the views of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) - a conglomerate of as many as 57 Islamic nations. In a statement put out by the foreign ministry, India rejected the OIC's remarks as “unwarranted” and “narrow-minded".
“The offensive tweets and comments denigrating a religious personality were made by certain individuals. They do not, in any manner, reflect the views of the Government of India," the statement added.
