Mumbai rain highlights: Over 750 passengers have been rescued after two monorail trains got stuck due to power snags amid the heavy rain. As per BMC and MMRDA officials, rescue operations are now complete. Based on the official statement from the MMRDA, officials have cited “overcrowding” as the primary reason behind the technical snags.

Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Raigad and other regions remain on high alert. As per Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the next 48 hours will be extremely crucial for the districts under IMD's red alert.

The heavy rain in Mumbai has also caused major flight disruptions. As of Tuesday evening, flights at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai experienced an average delay of 40 minutes. Speaking to HT, airport officials have stated a total of 17 flights were asked to go around before landing and 11 were asked to divert to nearby airports.

Impact of heavy rain in Mumbai and other districts

  • Two incidents of stuck monorails were reported amid the heavy rain in Mumbai. In the first incident, the monorail stopped abruptly between Acharya Atre & Wadala Mono Rail station, carrying 200 passengers. As per BMC, all passengers on this train were rescued and the monorail was towed back to Wadala station.
  • The second monorail was reported at Mysore Colony, where over 500 passengers were left stranded inside. Deputy chief fire officer Anil Parab told HT all 582 passengers were rescued and operation is complete.
  • As per the IMD, several parts of Mumbai recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Vikhroli East at 268 mm, Marol 262 mm, and Powai’s Passpoli 257 mm. Versova recorded 250 mm, while the Forsbery reservoir in F-South reported 220 mm of rainfall.
  • BMC added that the western suburbs were hit even harder in the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, with Chincholi fire station reprting 361 mm, Kandivali 337 mm, Dindoshi 305 mm, and Magathane 304 mm of rainfall. In South Mumbai, gauges at Dadar and Wadala crossed 280 mm, while the eastern suburbs of Chembur and Vikhroli also reported upwards of 290 mm.

Mumbai rain live updates: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Tuesday visited the disaster control room at Mantralaya to review the situation arising from heavy rains in Mumbai and other parts of the state.

Earlier in the morning, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a statement announcing the closure of all its offices and state-run establishments, except essential services, as a precautionary measure. Mumbai rain live updates: Mumbai Traffic Police reported that traffic was moving slowly on Shaikh Mistry Dargah Road in Wadala on Tuesday morning due to waterlogging caused by heavy rain.

Waterlogging was also seen at Hindmata, Andheri Subway, and stretches of the Eastern Express Highway, Mumbai-Gujarat Highway, and the Eastern Freeway.

Adding to the disruption, a technical snag in the signalling system between Ambivali and Shahad stations affected services on the Mumbai suburban network early in the morning.

According to a Central Railway spokesperson, trains on the main line were delayed by about 10 minutes, while harbour line services were running five minutes late around 8 am. A Western Railway spokesperson said suburban trains were also slightly delayed due to poor visibility.

Mumbai rain live updates: Visuals from the Gateway of India area showed heavy rain as Mumbai continued to grapple with downpour and waterlogging in several parts of the city.

For Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast “very heavy to extremely heavy” rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs, accompanied by occasional gusty winds of 45–55 kmph.

Rainfall during the early morning and late evening hours is expected to cause traffic congestion, with a 3.75-metre high tide recorded at 9:16 am and another of 3.14 metres expected at 8:53 pm.

Commuters reported waterlogging on railway tracks in low-lying areas such as Dadar, Matunga, Parel and Sion. However, railway authorities stated that the water remained below track level, ensuring train movement was not halted, though services faced delays.

Mumbai rain live updates: The ceiling plaster of a flat in a four-storey building collapsed early on Tuesday in Maharashtra’s Thane city, which has been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past few days, PTI reported, citing officials.

The incident occurred at 3.20 am in a first-floor flat of the nearly 30-year-old Hina Lakshmi Society in the Naupada area, according to Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell.

A section of the bedroom ceiling plaster gave way, he said.

Two men and a woman who lived in the flat were in the hall at the time and escaped unhurt, the official added.

Mumbai rain live updates: Visuals on Tuesday morning showed the Andheri Subway waterlogged as heavy rain continued across Mumbai. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the city received 177 mm of rainfall in just six to eight hours on Monday.

According to IMD data, Vikhroli recorded the highest rainfall at 139.5 mm between 8:30 am and 8:30 pm, followed by Santacruz with 129.1 mm, Juhu at 128.5 mm, and Chembur at 125 mm.

Bandra in the western suburbs, home to the Bandra-Kurla Complex business district, received 108.5 mm, while Mahalaxmi recorded 45.5 mm. In south Mumbai, Byculla saw 88.5 mm of rain, and the Colaba observatory logged 55.4 mm, an IMD official added.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials said the rain intensity reduced after 2 pm, but areas like Dadar, Worli, Chembur, Sion, Juhu, and Vikhroli had received over 150 mm between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm.
