01:22 hrs IST: The suspense has ended. The game in Port of Spain has been called off due to persistent rain. The frustration will mount for both teams.

01:13 hrs IST: It could be game over anytime now. It has started raining heavily again. That could be it.

01:01 hrs IST: Over in Taunton, South Africa have beaten England in spectacular style by three runs. What a humdinger. Series is level 1-1 with the final match in Cardiff.

00:55 hrs IST: The rain gods apparently are in no mood for a game. The rain has returned. If it does not stop by 30 minutes, that could be it for the game. If the rain does not stop by 1:40 AM hrs IST, then the game will be called off.

00:54 hrs IST: Good news. The match will start at 1:30 AM IST and it will be a 26-over game. West Indies need 194 to win via DLS method.

00:42 hrs IST: The situation continues to be bleak in Trinidad. If there is no word by 1:10 AM IST, the game could be called off. Over in Taunton, England need 13 off the last over.

00:27 hrs IST: Over in Taunton, England are 133/2, needing 42 off 30 balls. Jonny Bairstow has just departed for 47. Can South Africa pull things back?

00:23 hrs IST: There was a sense of optimism that there was a faint chance of a 1:51 AM IST start. However, the drizzle has returned. The covers are coming back on.

00:19 hrs IST: The covers have started to come off now. The cut off time for a Twenty20 game is 1:51 AM IST. The wait continues.

00:17 hrs IST: Over in Taunton, England are cruising towards the target of 175. They are on course for a series win.

00:11 hrs IST: Only one cover has been removed. The mopping up operations continue. The current picture does not look good.

23:57 hrs IST: The umpires are having a look as the ground staff continue the mopping up operations. No word yet about the start off time.

23:49 hrs IST: The ground staff are working hard to clear the puddles. However, a resumption is still far away. If it is a 20 over game, the target for West Indies will be 161.

23:35 hrs IST: The rain has stopped in Trinidad. However, cleaning up the ground and the outfield could take a very long time.

23:30 hrs IST: The situation does not change. Still raining. By our estimate, if the match does not start by 1:00 AM IST, then play might be called off. However, no announcements made yet. However,

23:18 hrs IST: India’s innings is now up. So, whenever the rain stops and it resumes, West Indies will now have a D/L adjusted target. However, the rain must stop and the ground must be clear. Does not look good at all.

23:04 hrs IST: Over in Taunton, South Africa have finished on 174/8 in 20 overs. Stiff target ahead for England.

22:58 hrs IST: An update from our correspondent in Trinidad, some puddles are being formed now. The situation is not looking all that great now.

22:46 hrs IST: The rain has picked up in intensity. With the drainage in Queen’s Park Oval not all that great, we might have to wait a bit before play can resume.

22:40 hrs IST: No improvement in the weather though in Trinidad. Over in Taunton, England have got the massive wicket of AB de Villiers for 46 as England look to restrict South Africa.

22:29 hrs IST: While we wait for the rain to stop in Trinidad, over in Taunton, South Africa are 116/4 after 13.4 overs. AB de Villiers looking in great touch on 36*

22:26 hrs IST: We start losing overs now. One over every eight minutes. However, it continues to pour in Port of Spain. After a rainy Champions Trophy, this was expected, considering the Caribbean storm season is round the corner.

22:17 hrs IST: With play already been delayed for over one hour, overs will start reducing now, one feels. If the rain lingers on for too long, we might not even have time to squeeze in a Twenty20. Confirmation, if play does not resume in 30 minutes, overs will start reducing.

22:10 hrs IST: Aargh! Yet again, the rain comes and the players are rushing off. Why resume when one knew that the rain was lurking in the horizon? Bad planning.

22:06 hrs IST: Play resumes after the rain break and MS Dhoni starts off in style with a boundary off Cummins.

22:01 hrs IST: All the covers have come off. Here is hoping that there is no more rain.

21:52 hrs IST: The covers are coming off slowly. Will have an update on how many overs have been lost. If at all, any.

21:25 hrs IST: Rain, Port of Spain, India vs West Indies. A relationship that is made in hell. The Test match was ruined due to rain while previously in 2002, two matches were rained off at this venue.

21:16 hrs IST: The clouds over the stadium are not looking too promising. One hour of rain is enough for a massive delay.

21:12 hrs IST: Uh oh! It has started to drizzle and the covers are coming out. This ground does not have a good drainage facility.

21:09 hrs IST: It is getting darker at Port-of-Spain. Rain might not be far away. Remember, the ground does not drain well.

21:04 hrs IST: WICKET! Holder gets Yuvraj Singh. Full ball and on the pads, Yuvraj whips it to mid wicket but he finds the fielder. Yuvraj Singh c Ewin Lewis b Jason Holder 4 (10).

21:01 hrs IST: Bishoo ends his spell. Impressive figures of 10-0-39-1. After 36 overs, India are 184/2.

20:59 hrs IST: Devendra Bishoo has figures of 9-0-35-1. He has been very impressive. He will bowl out now.

20:54 hrs IST: Yuvraj has not yet gotten off the mark while Kohli is looking in steady touch.

20:45 hrs IST: WICKET! Looks to work a legbreak but misses it. Umpire Dharmasena gives Dhawan the marching orders but the batsman reviews, replays show that the ball pitched in line and was hitting middle stump. Shikhar Dhawan LBW Devendra Bishoo 87 (92).

20:41 hrs IST: Kohli gets his first boundary. Bishoo bowls short and the Indian skipper pulls it through the deep mid wicket fence for a boundary.

20:34 hrs IST: 30 overs are up and India are 160/1. The stage is set for the onslaught in the death overs.

20:31 hrs IST: BAM! Hostile stuff from Miguel Cummins. Short ball and straight on middle, Kohli is hurried for pace as he looks to fend at it but the ball thuds into the glove and it falls safely to point.

20:29 hrs IST: FOUR! Short and on the pads, Dhawan stays on the crease and swats it to the long leg fence for a boundary. He is motoring along now.

20:21 hrs IST: Edged but safe! Sharp legbreak from Bishoo and Virat Kohli edges it past slip to third man for a couple.

20:17 hrs IST: WICKET! Finally, the wicket comes for the West Indies. Full and slow ball from Alzarri Joseph, Rahane miscues the lofted shot to mid on and Jason Holder takes the catch. Ajinkya Rahane c Jason Holder b Alzarri Joseph 62 (78).

20:13 hrs IST: Both Rahane and Dhawan are looking to attack after going past fifties. West Indies need a breakthrough.

20:06 hrs IST: WHAM! Magnificent way to bring up his 20th fifty. Cummins bowls full on the pads and Dhawan flicks it over long leg for a big six.

20:01 hrs IST: Edged but FOUR! Rahane brings up his 17th fifty. Good knock on his comeback.

19:52 hrs IST: Both batsmen are nearing fifties. They are not taking too many risks as West Indies look to slow down the scoring.

19:46 hrs IST: Legspin into the attack. Devendra Bishoo will be aiming to provide the breakthrough.

19:43 hrs IST: Both batsmen are nearing fifties. West Indies are struggling to break this partnership.

19:39 hrs IST: West Indies are losing the plot here as the concede too many boundaries. Once again, the last ball of the over goes away to the fence. India 81/0 after 16 overs.

19:33 hrs IST: Poor ball from Nurse. Bowls down leg and Dhawan helps it down to fine leg with a boundary. He ends the over poorly as well as the left-hander slams another boundary. India are 74/0 after 15 overs.

19:29 hrs IST: FOUR! Classy shot from Rahane. Full ball and in the slot outside off, the batsman leans into the shot and caresses the drive to the long off fence.

19:26 hrs IST: The first maiden over of the series. Nurse keeps it tight and Dhawan is content to play it out safely. India 59/0 after 13 overs.

19:23 hrs IST: Another poor ball and Rahane capitalises. Short ball and the batsman creams the pull shot to the deep mid wicket fence.

19:20 hrs IST: The fifty-run partnership is up and Rahane brings it up with a boundary. Short and wide delivery, the right-hander gets an inside edge that rolls away to the fine leg fence.

19:17 hrs IST: Spin introduced into the attack. Ashley Nurse into the attack. India 47/0 after 10 overs and have been given a great platform.

19:14 hrs IST: Both Rahane and Dhawan are looking in great touch as the partnership nears fifty. This is a great start for India

19:11 hrs IST: Holder once again errs in length and Rahane rides the bounce to square-cut it to the deep point fence.

19:10 hrs IST: Sloppy fielding from the West Indies. They allow an extra run as the partnership grows.

19:07 hrs IST: Dhawan is getting some treatment on his hand. He was struck a couple of overs ago.

19:00 hrs IST: FOUR! Brilliant shot from Dhawan! Short and wide from Holder, Dhawan has to reach for it and he leaps to crack it to deep cover for a boundary.

18:57 hrs IST: Finally, Rahane gets going with a boundary. That will give him some confidence. Joseph provides width and the batsman cashes in by punching it through the gap at point.

18:53 hrs IST: Good start from India and Dhawan as they reach 23/0 after five overs.

18:50 hrs IST: OUCH! Dhawan gets hit on the arm. Looks to fend a short ball from Holder but the ball seams away and hits him flush on the arm. He is getting some medical attention but he seems to be alright.

18:44 hrs IST: Dhawan continuing his form from the Champions Trophy here. Length ball from Joseph and the left-hander drives on the up past cover for his second boundary.

18:41 hrs IST: Apart from this limited-overs series in West Indies, England and South Africa will take part in the second T20I in Taunton. Another high-scoring encounter is expected.

18:38 hrs IST: FOUR! First boundary of the series and it comes courtesy Dhawan. Short and wide ball and the left-hander cracks the cut to the deep point fence.

18:35 hrs IST: Steady start for Holder. Only three runs in the first over. Not much swing on offer. Bounce is even. Alzarri Joseph to open from the other end.

18:31 hrs IST: Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane have come out to open the batting. Jason Holder will open the bowling. Two slips in place.

18:27 hrs IST: Amidst the gloom of India’s loss in the Champions Trophy 2017 final to Pakistan and Anil Kumble’s resignation, this is a great opportunity for India to put aside the off-field issues and win a series in the West Indies for the third consecutive time.

18:15 hrs IST: So Kuldeep Yadav makes his ODI debut. Ravindra Jadeja misses out. Umesh Yadav replaces Jasprit Bumrah.

18:14 hrs IST: Here are the playing XI of both teams:

India: Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli(c), Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni(wk), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav

West Indies: Evin Lewis, Kieran Powell, Shai Hope(w), Jason Mohammed, Roston Chase, Jonathan Carter, Jason Holder(c), Ashley Nurse, Devendra Bishoo, Alzarri Joseph, Miguel Cummins

Holder: “The conditions won’t change much it seems. Hopefully our guys will pick some wickets early. It looks a good surface. Last times we played here it didn’t change much. We have started our plans, our processes. The end result will take care of itself if we get the process right.”

Kohli: “Should be a good track to bat on once the moisture dries off. We feel the wicket would slow down. I have enjoyed the responsibilty of being a captain. Always love coming back here.”

18:04 hrs IST: West Indies have won the toss and have opted to bowl.

17:50 hrs IST: Windies board almost messed up Sunil Narine’s career, says this former WI player.

17:45 hrs IST: Toss in a short while.

DO YOU KNOW - India have lost three of their last four away ODIs against the West Indies.

17:20 hrs IST: This will be the first ODI between both teams since their 2015 World Cup clash in Perth, which MS Dhoni’s men won by four wickets.

17:10 hrs IST: Hello and welcome to HT’s live coverage of first of the five ODIs between India - West Indies.

West Indies, who are standing at the ninth spot in the ICC ODI rankings, failed to gain any point from the series against Afghanistan.

As a result, the upcoming series against the Men in Blue would be their last realistic chance to try to get those ranking points up in a bid to qualify automatically for the 2019 World Cup where only the top eight ranked teams are guaranteed qualification.

Meanwhile, India will be without Anil Kumble who stepped down from the position of head coach which he took up last year following Champions Trophy.

The Virat Kohli-led side will be with manager Dr M.V. Sridhar to supervise the team management for the West Indies tour.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Bangar and R Sridhar will continue to remain the batting coach and the fielding coach respectively.
