Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party (SP) Member of Parliament and son of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, made an unusual entry from environmental science engineering to politics.

Apparently his father and family did not want him to join politics. However, after Mulayam contested and won both Kannauj and Sambhal Lok Sabha seats in 1999 elections and subsequently resigned from Kannauj, the SP leaders felt that Kannauj seat could be retained only if Akhilesh contests that seat.

Akhilesh fought and defeated his nearest rival Akbar Ahmad Dumpy of BSP by more than 79, 000 votes in a bye-election held on February 17, 2000. He represents Kannauj in the 13th Lok Sabha. He is also a member of committee on Food, Civil Supplies and Public Distribution and Committee on Ethics

Projected as the heir of Samajwadi Party thrown, Akhilesh is still doing his internship under the able guidance of his father.
