ALFRESCO begins with a bang

The three-day inter-school cultural festival, ALFRESCO-2006, an annual event organised by the Boys' High School (BHS) and College to facilitate personality development, confidence-building, discipline and interpersonal relationship among the student community, began with a bang after the former Kanpur University vice-chancellor, Prof BN Asthana, cut the tape and later lighted the lamp at the well-packed Flynn Hall of the school on Tuesday morning.

Over 300 enthusiastic boys and girls all in high spirits to excel at the competitive events--debate, quiz, pictionary, dumb charades, solo singing, group dance, basketball, football and swimming -- during the three-day festival, were present along with their principals at the inaugural ceremony. They were representing six schools, St Fidelis College, Lucknow, Air Force School, Bamrauli, as well as St John's Academy, Crosthwaite Girls School, Boys High School (BHS) and Girls High School (GHS)--all of Allahabad.

BHS Principal, CV Innes, who welcomed Prof BN Asthana, spoke about his precious contribution to the cause of education during the long years of his tryst with academics, that began at Allahabad University, where he retired as a professor and then took over as the vice-chancellor of the Kanpur University.

"It is a privilege for us to have him here for this event, as his life presents a tremendous inspirational impetus to the young generations, said CV Innes while wishing success to the young participants at different events. "Winning or losing does not matter, what matters is participation with a good spirit of friendly competition", he said.

Prof Asthana, in his inaugural address, said that "a genius lights his own fire".

But a true leader "lights the fire among others". So, it is, indeed, commendable that BHS organised a prestigious inter-school event, ALFRESCO, every year to promote 'positive leadership' traits, creativity, personality development and a spirit of camaraderie in the young generation.

"This has been one among various other commendable roles which BHS has been playing to fulfill its social obligations under the inspiring guidance of its Principal, CV Innes," added Prof Asthana.

"To impart fairness to the process of assessment and rating of the competitors, independent judges were invited from outside, and none of them were from either BHS or other participating schools," informed BHS College Section head, V Massey.

Earlier, BHS captain Arjun Menon threw light on the history of Alfresco, which being an Italian word, meant 'Fresh air'. The stage was then handed over to the BHS cultural prefect and master of ceremonies, Raman Mishra, to set the ball rolling for a brisk take-off of ALFRESCO events.
