After detecting the anomaly in the marks of physics practical examination, AU Controller of Exams Prof HS Upadhyaya pulled up two clerks responsible for the error and removed one of them from the examination section for his callous approach. Orders for rectification of the marks of the two students have also been issued.

The error came to light when Prof Upadhyaya decided to randomly check records of results that were not declared by the varsity under the 'not ready' head.

During the checking, Prof Upadhyaya detected that physics practical marks of two BSc (computer science)-II have been inter-changed by the clerks concerned. He found that the student who had been awarded 25 was shown as having received just 12 marks while the other student was shown as having been awarded 25 marks.

Within moments of detecting the anomaly, Prof Upadhyaya summoned the two clerks entrusted with the task and pulled them up for the error. "One clerk, who had actually been given the responsibility of entering the marks, has been relieved of all examination-related works and removed from the section concerned. Orders for rectifying the error and declaring the correct results have also been passed," Prof Upadhyaya said while confirming the detection of the error.

However, he said that the inquiry revealed that it was nothing more than a human error and the failure of the person concerned to re-check the marks entered by him.

Embezzlement detected

A CASE of embezzlement by an employee of the accounts section of funds collected for scrutiny of answer-sheets from the students has been detected in the Allahabad University (AU).

The clerk has been found to have taken from Rs 200 to Rs 400 from students submitting the scrutiny forms, issuing them receipts for the entire amount but depositing just Rs 100 per form in the varsity account.

The inquiry committee formed to investigate the matter has identified the culprit and recommended action against him. Following the report, the AU finance officer has written to the registrar apprising him of the embezzlement and recommending appropriate action against the guilty.

Sources claim that the employee had earlier too been found guilty of a similar offence and was suspended by the varsity administration.

Campus sources say that as per rules a sum of only Rs 100 per scrutiny form is to be submitted by a student and that too is refunded if an error is actually detected during the re-checking. The accused reportedly accepted money from students for scrutiny of three to four papers along with the scrutiny form but deposited just Rs 100 per student in the varsity account. However, the Exam Controller's office was asked to carry out the scrutiny of all the papers that the students had actually requested and submitted the forms and the money for.

The culprit has reportedly issued receipts for a total of Rs 30,000 but deposited just Rs 12,000. "We have zeroed in on the guilty. He is an employee of the accounts section. We have submitted the inquiry report to the finance officer and the FO has recommended his suspension to the registrar," said Prof HS Upadhyaya, AU Controller of Exams, while confirming the incident.
