By the time the police reached the spot a good two hours later, Dikshit had been heckled and pushed around. In the melee, her shawl was ripped off, leaving her with a muscle tear in her neck. She was taken to RML hospital for a medical check.

The incident occurred after voting ended at 5 p.m.

While speaking to mediapersons, the Chief Minister's BJP rival from Gole Market, Poonam Azad, and her husband Kirti Azad alleged that the CM's son-in-law, Imran, entered the polling booth with five women. "Of these, only two cast genuine votes. When the presiding officer confronted Imran, he began dialling Sheila Dikshit's number," alleged Azad.

He claimed Dikshit arrived on the scene accompanied by sister Rama Dhawan and their supporters. "She was allowed to enter the building while we were standing outside," said Azad.

Dikshit said, "Imran is a polling agent. Kirti Azad began abusing him. I did not know what was happening, but the situation was out of control...One of their supporters pulled off my shawl.”
