Congress has accused veteran actor Dharmendra -- contesting from Bikaner -- of bigamy, alleging that he illegally married fellow actress Hema Malini without divorcing his first wife.

The Opposition party has also alleged that Dharmendra and Hema Malini converted to Islam, as a second marriage is not permitted under the Hindu Marriage Law, and changed their names to Dilawar Khan and Ayesha respectively.

On Thursday, Congress leaders KK Mishra and Akthar Beg submitted to court a nikah nama, or a Muslim marriage certificate, as evidence to support their claim.

Judicial Magistrate Narendra Jain has now fixed the next hearing in the case to April 24.

Advocate Shailendra Dwivedi, who is fighting the case on behalf of the Congress leaders, has submitted the fresh evidence along with the affidavit in the court.

"The court has completed the hearing of the complainants in the matter and has also admitted the fresh evidence as nikah nama in the case," Dwivedi told reporters after the hearing and added that the court will now give its ruling in the matter on April 24.

The Congress leaders have alleged that Dharmendra had married Hema Malini by embracing Islam, but without divorcing his first wife as per the Hindu Marriage Act and therefore, his nomination be cancelled as he has not given correct information in the nomination papers about his marriage with Hema Malini.

The complainants also demanded for the termination of the membership of Hema Malini from Rajya Sabha on the ground of her alleged illegal marriage with Dharmendra.
