Enter Priyanka Chopra, exit Madhuri Dixit?
Choreographer Saroj Khan is all set to become a film director, but her favourite, Madhuri, will not be a part of it, reports Vajir Singh.Updated: May 10, 2007 13:42 IST
You have to hand it to her - the 57-year-old Saroj Khan is as feisty as anyone can get. There may have been differences with the Yash Raj banner but whenever they have needed her, Saroj Khan responded with pucca professionalism.
Now the tables have turned. Madhuri Dixit's comeback film, Aaja Nachle - produced by Yash Raj has Vaibhavi Merchant, the 'current flavour of the season' as its choreographer
It's no secret now that Saroj Khan is extremely upset with the Chopras for sidelining her once again. She's also upset with the 'Dhak-dhak' heroine, whom she has given enough memorable numbers.
Apparently, the actress didn't speak to Chopras on Saroj's behalf.
No guru dakshina: If Madhuri had stated her preference for Saroj Khan, the Chopras couldn't have ignored the request. As soon as word spread that Saroj wasn't in the race for the prestigious project, the seasoned choreographer resolved not to depend on "ungrateful disciples."
The dance stalwart's directorial debut Sati...a Burning Desire to Love will feature Priyanka Chopra. A source connected with the film said, "Sarojji is very upset with Madhuri is a pity But Priyanka has more market value today She is also a favourite with the younger generation."
Matter of choice: When quizzed about the controversy, Saroj's manager, Rajkumar responded, "Remember it's a film from the Yash Raj camp where only Yash and Aditya Chopra decide. Madam will not degrade herself by asking anyone, 'Why not me?' If Madhuriji has decided to work with Vaibhavi Merchant, good for her."
Trade talkies: Film trade circles aren't disappointed with Saroj's choice (Priyanka). Said one tradewallah, "Madhuri is a superb artiste, but she is now married with two kids. The Indian audience likes heroines in their 20s and early 30s."
Meanwhile Ms Dixit has been silent for some weeks now, reportedly after being instructed to keep a low profile till Aaja Nachle's release. But her secretary Rakesh Nath responded. "Madhuri has been in India for eight months now. If Saroj wanted her in the debut film, why didn't she call us? At least she should've given us some hint."
He added, "Madhuri did suggest Sarojji's name. But she is just an actress and can't take a call on her own."
According to reports, Dixit recently went to Bangalore to take a new look' test for Feroz Nadiadwala's Hera Pheri III...an indication that she's open to films. "She is in India only for Aaja Nachle after which she'll go back to the US," the secretary replied crisply.
