Additional police personnel were deployed and visitors are being thoroughly checked as part of the measures put in place even as protests erupted in the national capital and other places.

Senior police officials said they have not received any specific threat to the embassy and the security beef up was a precautionary measure as part of a general alert in view of the situation.

Earlier, addressing the Friday congregation at the Jama Masjid, Shahi Imam Ahmed Bhukhari said the Pope's statement was a deliberate attempt to hurt the sentiments of Muslims around the world and demanded an apology from him.
