Bend It Like Beckham

fame is back with

It’s A Wonderful Afterlife

, a comedy about a mother who goes to extreme lengths to get her fat daughter married. The film, that features actress Shabana Azma, takes inspiration from the

Ealing comedies

of the ’40s and ’50s, a series of films that were comedic but also had an element of horror.

Says Chadha, “I’ve seen a few

Ealing comedies

... and have loved the genre. I thought it’ll be fun if there’re ghosts in the film with funny punchlines... They are always there on screen but only Mrs Sethi (Shabana’s character) can see them. It’s funny to see how she interacts with them.”

“So here, there’re ghosts who’d be loved by everyone and in fact, people would talk about them once they come out of theatres,” she adds.
