Lightning kills eleven people in Orissa

Lightning has claimed at least 11 lives at different places of Orissa since Tuesday, official sources said on Wednesday.
Two casualties each had been reported from Jajpur, Cuttack, Bhadrak and Angul districts, while one death each had occurred in Puri, Nayagarh and Kendrapara districts.
Two youths in their twenties were struck by lightning at Pakuasahi village in Jajpur on Tuesday.
Barely a few hours later two others met the same fate at Kotadwar village in Cuttack when they took shelter under a tree as heavy rain lashed the area.
Another person, who was with them, sustained injuries.
In Bhadrak two others died when a thunderbolt struck them.
Reports said while two middle-aged persons died near Kaniha in Angul district following lightning, one each lost their lives near Ali in Kendrapara, Brahmagiri in Puri and Ranpur in Nayagarh district.
The control room sources said as many as 717 persons have lost their lives due to lightning in the last three years.
According to revenue control room figures, the state witnessed 224 deaths in 2003, 279 in 2004 and 214 in 2005.
During last two financial year, Orissa had submitted two separate memoranda to the union home ministry for inclusion of lightning as a naturual calamity to enable family members of victims to claim compensation.
