WHILE THE city police have been desperately trying to hunt down killers of Mehar Bhargava, the BSP chief Mayawati today shot off a letter to Governor TV Rajeswar demanding CBI probe in the case.
Mayawati, who met family members of Mehar on Tuesday, wrote in her letter, “Real culprits are moving scot-free and are not being arrested only because they have political patronage of the Samajwadi Party”. She wrote, “If this fact is not correct then there is no reason whatsoever for Mulayam Singh Yadav not to give immediate consent for CBI inquiry”.
During meeting with Mayawati, the family members had also asked for CBI probe.
Similar demand was also made by the former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee after he met the family. Mayawati, however, said the demand was not only of the family but also of the public at large.
Mayawati said, under prevailing circumstances, the Governor should direct the government to order CBI investigation. She said, despite eye-witnesses, the Lucknow police had not been able to nab the killers.
With this letter, Mayawati has directly opened front against the Samajwadi Party. While the issue has already brought considerable pressure on the government, the city police apathy in dealing with the case has caused widespread resentment among the people.
