These were the words of Editor of 'Ashwaghosh' and Professor of Soviet Studies at Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Dr Tulsiram while delivering a special lecture on ' Historical and cultural background of Dalit movement and its undercurrents' organised by 'Parivesh', a literary and cultural organisation of students of Allahabad University at Nirala Sabhagar on Sunday.

AU Vice- Chancellor Prof RG Harshe presided over the programme while former AU Student Union secretary Prem Shankar Singh conducted the programme.
According to Dr Tulsiram, Mahatma Buddha was the first to oppose casteism and even the thoughts of the priests were under the effect of Buddhist ideology. Dr Tulsiram called Mahatma Phule's work "Gulamgiri" a declaration of freedom of the dalits. He said that Dr BR Ambedkar and Phule followed the same ideology and gave it a form of political ideology.

Prof Harshe said that every caste has positive and negative constituents and several associates of Dr Ambedkar were Brahmin. He advocated for counting Dr Ambedkar among the greatest citizens of the country who emphasised on understanding the complications of inter-relationships of all castes and sects.

Prof Harshe said that to remember the history is good but it is virtuous to forget some of the old issues for the growth of the country. Prof Harshe also deliberated on the secular and democratic ideology of Dr Ambedkar.

Pranay Krishna of AU Hindi Department proposed a vote of thanks.
