Slum dwellers storm BMC HQ

ANGRY RESIDENTS of Arjun Nagar shanties on Raisen Road today forcibly entered in the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters- Sadar Manzil and demonstrated against their removal. Earlier in the day, the BMC demolition squad reached to remove these shanties.

ANGRY RESIDENTS of Arjun Nagar shanties on Raisen Road today forcibly entered in the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters- Sadar Manzil and demonstrated against their removal. Earlier in the day, the BMC demolition squad reached to remove these shanties.

Led by mayor-in-council member Mohammed Sagir, the demonstrators entered in Sadar Manzil and misbehaved with security guards who tried to stop them at the gate.

It is learnt that these shanties are situated on road behind Apsara Talkies. The road is mentioned in the Master Plan- 2005.

BMC commissioner Manish Singh had ordered removal of the shanties. Following the order, the BMC team reached Arjun Nagar today afternoon, asking residents to remove the shanties on their own. There are about 100 shanties in this locality.
Later, these shanty- dwellers rushed to Sadar Manzil and sat on dharna for about one hour.

A delegation of shanties dwellers led by Mohammed Sagir also met the BMC commissioner Manish Singh and urged him to stop this drive. Singh assured that these shanties dwellers would be given plots at other places. He clarified that the shanties dwellers will have to leave that place meant for the road.
