Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Saturday condemned and apologised for the Valentine Day attack.

His party workers attacked at a private programme in Nallasopara area in neighbouring Thane district.

"What these people did was despicable and condemnable. I am ashamed to call perpetrators of this act Shiv Sainiks," the Sena mouthpiece Saamna said quoting him.

Thackeray said, "It is said that women were beaten up in the Nallasopara incident. If that really happened, then it is a symbol of cowardice ".

"I have always instructed Shiv Sainiks that in any situation women should not be humiliated and harassed. Have they forgotten our history wherein Shivaji Maharaj sent back the daughter-in-law of the Subhedar of Kalyan, with honour."

The Sena chief said, "Our opposition to the Valentine Day is from an ideology. There is no reason for opposing those in love, in a Taliban like manner.

"But whatever goes on in the name of Valentine Day does not fit into our culture. What goes on is an obscene marketing of love. That is why, at many places, Sainiks targeted commercial establishments connected with the celebrations."
