The prime accused in the murder of a tribal man, Khetaram Bheel, was arrested on Wednesday. Bheel, 22, had been killed for his alleged love affair with two Muslim women in Barmer, the police said.

Chohtan circle officer Surendra Kumar, who is the investigating officer, said that they have arrested Amar Khan on Wednesday, who has confessed to his crime before the police. According to Kumar, Amar told the police that he had seen Bheel in an objectionable position with his sister-in-law. He said that when he reached the spot, Bheel ran away and he chased him.

Khan told the police, Bheel could not run far and fell down while scaling a wall. Khan got hold of Bheel and started beating him up. He also told the police that he later took Bheel to the house and tied up his legs and hands. Quoting Khan, Kumar said Bheel managed to escape but Amar and his family members caught him a few metres away from the house and started beating him up.

Amar reportedly told police, they beat up Bheel with sticks and later strangled him with a rope.

Meanwhile, the police have got the medical board’s report, which revealed that Bheel had many fatal injuries on his body. He had serious injuries on his head, face. His leg was fractured.

Two other men had been arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder and remanded in police custody for seven days.

Bheel, of Mekranwala village under Ramsar police station, is married with three children and his wife is pregnant with the fourth child. Bheel got married in 2012 and has a five-year-old son and two daughters.

He had rented land from a widow, Aasiyat, who lives in the same village, to run a brick unit. Aasiyat has four daughters, three are married. The youngest daughter lives in Mekranwala village with her.

Bheel allegedly had an affair with two of Aasiyat’s daughters — the youngest and Amar’s wife.

He was killed by the members of Aasiyat’s family on July 21, the police said.

Amar has been charged with strangling Bheel for having an affair with the former’s wife and sister-in-law, the police said.

Police said that they had detained nine accused in the case on the day of the incident and later arrested two. They have been identified as Pathai Khan (18) and Anwar Khan (40).

Surendra Kumar said that after interrogation, eight accused, including some women, were detained on July 21. “We are waiting for phone call records of all the accused. We can confirm that Bheel’s murder was a planned conspiracy,” he said.

Additional superintendent of police Rameshwarlal Meghwal said that preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was in love with a woman, which led to the rivalry between the two families.

HT could not speak to the women as they refused to speak in the absence of male members of the family. The men are either in police custody or on the run.
