Todabhim SDM under scrutiny for assaulting man who complained about ‘roads’

A 32-year-old man was allegedly thrashed by an administration official and arrested on charges of misbehaviour after he complained about roads in his village in Rajasthan’s Karauli district, police said on Wednesday.
Todabhim sub-divisional magistrate Jagdish Arya was seen assaulting the complainant, Prakash Chand Meena, during the ‘Nyay Aapke Dwar’ programme and a video of the incident was being circulated on Tuesday.
Prakash had a verbal duel with Arya after he raised the problems of roads in his village during a camp. Arya reached Atal Sewa Kendra of Kamalpura village to participate in a public hearing. Someone shot a video of Arya beating Meena after he requested the SDM to construct roads in the village.
After a heated argument, the SDM reportedly pushed, dragged and thrashed the villager before handing him over to police. “He (Prakash) was arrested under section 151 of CrPC on the complaint by the SDM and was released on Tuesday,” SHO of Balghat police station said.
Prakash, a resident of Kamalpura village, 120 km away from the state capital Jaipur, was released soon after his arrest, a police official said.
He later approached the police to file a complaint against Arya. The complaint was registered late night on Tuesday at Balghat police station.
Station house officer of Balghat police, Hemendra Kumar said that a complaint has been registered against Arya under sections 323, 341 and 34 of the IPC.
“I had requested the SDM to construct a road in the village but he got furious and said that road construction was not his work. He then started beating me along with two of his supporters,” Prakash said.
Ghanshyam Mehar, Congress MLA from Todabhim in Karauli district, held a protest outside the Arya’s office on Wednesday, seeking his termination. Mehar alleged that there have been complaints against the SDM earlier too. “We have launched a dharna before the SDM office demanding his termination and legal action against him,” he said.
Karauli district collector Abhimanyu Kumar said that police is investigating the matter. “Police will submit a report after an inquiry. Action will be taken against whoever is found guilty.”
In his defence, Arya said that the video that was circulated on social media showed only one side of the story. “The video didn’t show the man abusing me first. He started abusing and misbehaving with me at the public hearing. We registered a complaint under section 151 against him.”
