As Christmas Day draws closer, families search for unique ideas to keep the Elf on the Shelf magic alive. A Christmas tradition, it involves a Scout Elf who watches over a family and reports back to Santa Claus every night.

The elf, for example, can be found in different places throughout the day. It can also be involved in a fun activity, like baking cookies or decorating the Christmas tree.

Here’s how the story goes: Santa’s Scout Elves fly to the North Pole each night of December to report to him if kids have been behaving (or not). The elves then fly back and hide in a new spot in the house, where the children find them the next morning. Scout Elves like hiding in sneaky spots in the house, and might even stir up mischief the night before.

Your elf can appear whenever you’d like it to. Some elves appear between November 24 and December 1. This gives them a month to have fun until they fly back to the North Pole with Santa on Christmas Eve.

Here are 5 unique Elf on the Shelf ideas for you this Christmas Eve:

Elf on the Shelf makes smores – Place some marshmallows on a wire or fork and then put the elf by a candle. Make sure you leave some graham crackers and Hershey bars.
Elf in a bubble bath – Fill a bowl or sink with marshmallows. Simply let the elf hop in!
‘Get ready with me; (GRWM) elf – Place the elf in front of a mirror. Leave some cosmetics around, and maybe a towel too.
Elf gets stuck – Leave the elf tangling in some Christmas lights.
Elf makes breakfast – Place a small pan of marshmallows, sprinkles and chocolate chips in front of the elf.
