Easy Ayurvedic remedies to get rid of dandruff

There can be many reasons behind dandruff from dry skin, a common fungus called malassezia to seborrheic dermatitis. Here are Ayurvedic remedies to deal with dandruff.

Dandruff can be a cause of major discomfort as it makes you feel itchy and rough on your scalp all the time. Plus those white flakes of skin can cause much embarrassment. There can be many reasons behind dandruff from dry skin, a common fungus called malassezia to seborrheic dermatitis. While it does not cause any health hazarad, nobody wants it for long. According to Ayurveda, dandruff is caused by imbalance in doshas. While dry and flaky dandruff could indicate pitta and vata doshas, wet or a bit oily means an imbalance in kapha-vata doshas. To avoid dandruff, one should wash hair at least three times a week and eat a healthy diet rich in Vitamin B, omega fatty acids and zinc apart from protein and vegetables.

"Dandruff is one of the major reasons of hairfall in more than 40% of the people with hairloss issue," says Ayurveda expert Dr Dixa Bhavsar. She also suggests a few quick and easy Ayurvedic tips to help you get rid of dandruff quickly.

- Neem is a popular ingredient in many Ayurvedic formulations. To get rid of dandruff Dr Bhavsar suggests washing your hair with water that is boiled with neem leaves in it.

- A mixture of triphala and curd too can help you get rid of dandruff. Take a glass of curd and mix a tbsp of triphala churna in it and keep it overnight. Next morning, you must apply the mixture on your scalp for 30-40 minutes after which you can wash your hair with neem water. Doing this twice a week will help with dandruff.

- Take 5 gm of tankan bhasma, also known as suhaga, and mix it with coconut oil. Apply on your hair overnight. Wash your hair the next morning with a shampoo. You may do it twice a week for best results.

- Take a cup of aloe vera gel and mix two tbsp of castor oil. Apply this to your scalp and leave it overnight. Wash this the next morning. Do it once a week.

- Take overnight soaked fenugreek seeds and grind it to make a paste. Add 2 tbsp of aloe vera gel to it. Mix nicely and apply it to your scalp. Rinse your hair with water after 1 hour followed by a mild shampoo. Do it twice a week.

- Heat a bowl of coconut oil for 1-2 minutes. Add a tbsp of lemon juice to it and mix thoroughly. Apply it to your hair. Leave it overnight or for two hours before washing your hair. Do it once a week.

- Soak 1 tbsp methi seed powder and 1 tbsp of triphala churna in 1 bowl of curd overnight. Apply it as a mask next morning for an hour and wash it with mild shampoo. Do it once or twice a week.
