Lok Sabha Elections 2019: The Congress has fielded Dr Arvind Singh Chauhan, a Rajput, from the Gautam Budh Nagar Lok Sabha constituency, with the hope that the voters from the Rajput, Muslim and Brahmin communities, as well as voters from other castes, will help the party win the seat, said sources.

The Congress has fielded Dr Arvind Singh Chauhan, who fought 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Aligarh as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate, to contest the upcoming general elections from Gautam Buddh Nagar constituency.

Chauhan, 31, had lost to Satish Gautam of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014 polls. A PhD in management from Noida International University, Chauhan did his bachelors in business administration (BBA) from Noida’s Amity University and masters in business administration (MBA) from University of Leeds in England.

The Congress candidate is the son of Aligarh’s Thakur Jaiveer Singh, who is currently a member of legislative council (MLC) from BJP. Earlier, Singh was a minister in the BSP government in Uttar Pradesh, and was considered very close to BSP chief Mayawati.

Chauhan is promoting himself as the chancellor of Noida International University, head of the real estate firm DAH NX One that deals in realty projects in Greater Noida and a young leader. A day after getting the ticket, Chauhan said he will connect with the youth and bring about a change in this constituency.

“I have been working as the chancellor with Noida International University and heading the realty firm DAH NX One. My focus is to work for job creation for the youth, develop rural areas, women safety, homebuyers’ issues and to make city a better place to live in,” Chauhan, who belongs to Rajput community, said.

He said he has started his campaign in Noida, Greater Noida and other parts of the GB Nagar constituency that has total five segments — Noida, Dadri, Jewar, Khurja and Sikandrabad.

In 2014 LS polls, Dr Mahesh Sharma (BJP) had won the seat defeating Surendra Singh Nagar (BSP) by 25,8871 votes. In the 2009 general elections, Surendra Singh Nagar had won the seat by 15,904 votes, defeating Dr Mahesh Sharma of the BJP. Polling for the Gautam Buddh Nagar constituency will be held on April 11, 2019.

The Congress has fielded a Rajput from this seat with the hope that the voters from the Rajput, Muslim and Brahmin communities, including voters from other castes, will help them win, said sources.

Around 16 lakh out of 22,41,234 voters are in 900 small and large villages. Other voters are from group housing complexes and plotted areas in Noida and Greater Noida. Political parties’ estimates suggest that the Rajputs have the largest vote share as they have 310 villages with around 4,00,000 votes. There are around 3 lakh Muslims, 2 lakh Gujjars, 2.5 lakh Brahmins, 1 lakh Jats and other voters.

This time the BSP and the Samajwadi Party alliance has fielded first timer Satveer Nagar from GB Nagar seat, while the BJP is likely to name its candidate soon. Chauhan said that he has an advantage in this election because the BJP has not taken adequate steps for women safety, job creation and to empower farmers.

“The data says that 5 lakh youngsters are jobless in Gautam Budh Nagar district alone. And unemployment is increasing at an alarming scale. If we are elected, then we will work towards job creation by taking effective steps in all directions. BJP’s policies have failed to bring change in the lives of all segments. We will bring a change with creating effective structures for segments of our society,” Chauhan said.
