Bank burglars fail to open lockers, make do with Rs 800 kept in cashier’s drawer

According to the police, the accused could not find any gold or cash and stole Rs 800 from a cashier’s drawer.

Unidentified burglar/s broke into a bank, ensured that nothing was caught on CCTV cameras, but could only make away with Rs 800 from a cashier’s drawer as they could not break into the bank’s vault, early on Wednesday.

The Malad police have registered a case under section 457 (housebreaking) and section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), based on a complaint by employees of Kapol Co-operative bank in Malad (West), after they reported to work.

According to the police, the accused broke the locks of the bank’s shutter.

“There are no security guards or CCTV cameras outside the bank. The bank is in a housing society, which too does not have a security guard or CCTV cameras,” said a Malad police officer. According to the police, the accused could not find any gold or cash and stole ₹800 from a cashier’s drawer. The accused, however, found the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) of the CCTV cameras inside the bank and took it.

Suryakant Kanakiya, 73, chairman of the Kapol society building that houses the bank, said, “The bank had a security guard when there was an ATM, but after the ATM was shut, the guard was removed too. Neither the bank nor our housing society has a watchman. Both have a watchman only during the day.”

“We do not have any CCTV network in our building. This is the first theft in our society,” added Kanakiya.

The employees of the bank refused to share contact details of the manager, while the phone numbers given on the bank’s website were unreachable.

Earlier this year, an unidentified person broke into the Maheshwari Udyan branch of Dena Bank, but only managed to steal Rs 16,700 in coins from the drawers.
