Man sets live-in partner on fire for cheating on him near Mumbai

A 34-year-old woman suffered 70% burn injuries after her live-in partner set her on fire on Monday evening in Vasai while blaming her for cheating on him.

The neighbours heard her cries and admitted her in a Vasai hospital, which referred her to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli. Her condiction is extremely serious.

Anita Wankhede, 34, a mother of four, was in a live-in relationship with Manoj Chaure and they had been living in a chawl in Vasai since March 2017. One Baburao Esarkar, who also lived with the couple, allegedly had an affair with Anita and Chaure found out about it, said police inspector Sanjay Hazare of Waliv police station. Anita and Chaure often fought over this and to cover up the affair she used to say that Baburao was her brother,, said Hazare.

“After a fight over the same issue on Monday evening Chaure poured kerosene on her and set her on fire in a fit of rage. Chaure and Baburao both are absconding,” said Hazare. He added, “We have registered a case of attempt to murder against Chaure and Baburao after Anita gave a statement at the hospital.” Police said Anita’s last live-in partner is in Chandrapur jail for murdering his mother and her husband abandoned her years ago and took the four children with him.
