Maharashtra bandh highlights: Over 400 protesters detained in Mumbai after violence; CM says ready for talks

Maharashtra bandh: A shutdown called by Maratha outfits demanding reservation began in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and several other areas of Maharashtra on Wednesday

By HT Correspondent | Jul 27, 2018 17:59 IST

A shutdown called by Maratha outfits demanding reservation began in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and several other areas of Maharashtra on Wednesday.

Shops were closed in Navi Mumbai and auto-rickshaws were off the roads, a day after large-scale violence marred a statewide protest by Maratha outfits demanding quota in jobs and education. Schools and colleges, however, were exempt from the shutdown.

The Marathas have been agitating for reservation for the community in government jobs and education for a while now.

Around 45,000 policemen -- the force’s full strength in the city -- of uniformed policemen will be deployed across the city.
