A shutdown called by Maratha outfits demanding reservation began in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and several other areas of Maharashtra on Wednesday.
Shops were closed in Navi Mumbai and auto-rickshaws were off the roads, a day after large-scale violence marred a statewide protest by Maratha outfits demanding quota in jobs and education. Schools and colleges, however, were exempt from the shutdown.
The Marathas have been agitating for reservation for the community in government jobs and education for a while now.
Around 45,000 policemen -- the force’s full strength in the city -- of uniformed policemen will be deployed across the city.

Over 400 detained in Mumbai
As many as 447 persons were detained across Mumbai as protesters demanding reservation for the Maratha community took to the streets, according to PTI. In adjoining Thane city, police detained 20 persons for vandalising public property.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued a statement, saying the government is ready for discussions with Maratha outfits anytime. “The government has taken cognisance of protest by Maratha community and has taken several decisions. The government is ready to talk to them. Maharashtra had made a law for reservation to the community but that was stayed by Bombay HC.”
