Mumbai man attacks wife, tries to kill her after she refuses divorce payout of ₹5 lakh
The police said that while the accused tried to kill her, they have not booked him under the section of attempted murder
The Bhoiwada police have arrested a man who allegedly tried to kill his wife after she refused his divorce offer of ₹5 lakh. The police probe revealed that the husband is in an extramarital relationship with another woman and the two came up with a plan to offer the accused’s wife ₹5 lakh to agree to a divorce. They allegedly planned that if she refused, they would kill her.

The arrested accused has been identified as Sudhir Darekar, 45, a BMC employee, who is married to Sakshi, 34, a hair stylist. Darekar allegedly was in relationship with a woman named Sarika Shinde.
The police said that recently, Sarika told Sudhir that her family had arranged her marriage with someone else, but she wanted to marry him instead. On Friday, Sudhir told his Sakshi about the divorce plan and offered her ₹5 lakh to leave him. However, she started recording his video on her mobile phone instead. This angered Sudhir who assaulted her and then smothered her with a pillow till she lost consciousness. The accused then went into the kitchen to retrieve a grinder stone to attack Sakshi with, but by the time he returned, Sakashi had gained consciousness and managed to escape out of the house, said a police official.
Immediately after the attack, she took a taxi to the Bhoiwada police station where she narrated her ordeal to the police officers. She was then taken to KEM hospital. After her detailed statement was recorded, her husband was arrested.
While the police said that the accused tried to kill her, they have not booked him under the section of attempted murder of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Since Sakshi did not suffer any serious injuries, they have booked the husband under sections 324, 323, 504 And 427 of IPC. The girlfriend of the accused has not been arrested yet.
