A man accused of molesting at least 20 women in the Bandra-Khar region over the past month was arrested on Thursday.

The police said Jibran Safi Sayyed, 28, worked in the garment business. They said he had been arrested before in 2011 for kidnapping and raping a woman and was out on bail.

The Mumbai crime branch swung into action after two women, in separate incidents, reported being molested while they were out for a walk. They filed complaints at the Khar police station.

Both women said a man on a maroon Activa scooter molested them.

In the first case, a 21-year-old woman who works in a private firm was molested when she was out on a morning walk around 6am on June 29.

She told the police she was attacked at Nargis Dutt Road in Pali hill.

In the second case, the woman had gone for an evening walk around 7pm on July 1, near Rizvi College at Carter Road when she was targeted.

The crime branch’s unit 9 then started an inquiry in both cases and checked CCTV cameras in the areas where the attacks took place.

“We found a clear picture of Sayyed in the cameras with his Maroon Activa, near Ambedkar chowk, which is a few meters from where the incident took place,” said a crime branch officer. “The Activa’s headlight was on. There was no registration number on the bike,” said the official, adding that they noticed two small fog lights were fitted below the headlight and that there was no side mirror .

During the probe, a team led by police inspector Mahesh Desai and assistant inspector Nitin Patil found 122 maroon Activas were registered to addresses in Khar and Bandra area.

The team visited Sayyed’s house and found a scooter matching the one they saw in the CCTV footage.

Sayyed was taken into custody and during interrogation, he confessed that he only targeted women during their morning and evening walks.

He said he had molested at least 6 to 7 women near the Mount Mary church, four women at carter road and five women in Bandstand in Bandra (West), said an officer.

As of now, only two victims have come forward and reported the attacks at the Khar police station.

Sayyed lives in Navpada in Bandra (East) with his wife and parents. The police said he Sayyed lurked around small lanes and only targeted women who used such lanes on thier morning and evening walks.
