Since last year, the migrants have been registering their arrival with the police, ever since residents of an Andheri housing society complained to the cops that three minor Kashmiri girls begging for Kashmir Relief Fund were collecting funds for terrorist organisations. One of the girls landed in a children’s welfare home before being reclaimed by her family.

“The migrants come voluntarily and furnish details of the entire family, with photos,” said sub-inspector Gajanan Jogdand. Since December, Nirmal Nagar police station has registered 410 migrants, compared to 207 in the corresponding period last year.

This year, the unusually cool weather in Mumbai has been a pleasant surprise for the migrants.
