Ismail Sayed Chand, 42, and his aide Chandrabhan Ramkumar Pal, 35, ran a hotel along the NH13 in Bijapur, Karnataka. They reportedly pilfered adulterated oil from oil tankers that visited their hotel.

On February 8, 2003, the duo brought the driver of an oil tanker, Arif Khan, and his two helpers Ayaz Khan and Zulfi Yadav to the hotel at gunpoint. They emptied the oil in barrels and strangulated Arif and burnt his body. Ayaz and Zulfi were drugged and killed.

Chand was arrested and Pal went underground. Granted bail, Chand fled to Mumbra, where he set up Ali Builders and Developers. Pal became an auto rickshaw driver.
