Arijit Singh to Monali Thakur: Reality show participants who made it

Ever since the trend of music reality shows became popular in India, they have been a boon for aspiring musicians. They are not only considered platforms to showcase one’s talent, but are also ways to make inroads into the industry. Here, we look at a few reality show participants who are on a roll in Bollywood.
Known for: ‘Phir mohabbat karne’ (Murder 2; 2011), ‘Tum hi ho’ (Aashiqui 2; 2013), ‘Mast magan’ (2 States; 2014), ‘Gerua’ (Dilwale; 2015) and ‘Itni si baat hain’ (Azhar)
Journey so far: Arijit participated in Fame Gurukul in 2005. After struggling for many years, he broke into Bollywood’s music scene with hits like ‘Phir mohabbat’. But, Arijit’s claim to fame was ‘Tum hi ho’ from Aashiqui 2. There has been no looking back for the singer since. Today, he is one of the most sought-after male vocalists in the country. He has won multiple awards and performs live extensively.
Known for: ‘Sawaar loon’ from Lootera (2013), ‘Moh moh ke dhaage’ (Dum Laga Ke Haisha; 2015) and ‘Cham cham’ (Baaghi).
Journey so far: Monali was a contestant on Indian Idol 2 in 2005. After struggling to get work in B-Town, she got an offer from composer Pritam Chakraborty. She sang two songs in Race (2008) – ‘Khwab dekhe’ and ‘Zara zara touch me’. After she sang the hit number, ‘Sawaar loon’, there’s been no looking back for Monali. Apart from singing for Bollywood films, she has also been singing in several regional films.
Known for: ‘Gandi baat’ (R... Rajkumar; 2013), ‘Selfie le le re’ (Bajrangi Bhaijaan; 2015) and ‘Jabra fan’ (Fan)
Journey so far: Nakash participated in Indian Idol 2 in 2005. After struggling initially, he assisted AR Rahman on such as Rockstar (2011) and Highway (2014). “I worked hard to get into B-Town. The process can be depressing, but what matters is the result,” he says. He has been receiving lucrative playback offers of late.
Known for: ‘Mann Kunto Maula’ (Gunday; 2014), ‘Aaj ibaadat’ (Bajirao Mastani; 2015) and ‘Fake ishq’ (Housefull 3)
Journey so far: Altamash was among the top 18 contestants on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar in 2010. He also participated in Music Ka Maha Muqabla. He has spent around five years in B-Town, and today, his hands are full with music projects. He made his debut with the title song of No Problem (2010).
Known for: Music of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 (2015) and Housefull 3
Journey so far: Toshi rose to fame as a participant on Amul Star Voice Of India in 2007. He can sing genres ranging from qawwali to pop. He also appeared on other reality shows like Ustaadon Ke Ustaad and Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star. Toshi started his Bollywood music career with his brother, Sharib — a finalist on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005). They composed the song, ‘Maahi’, for the movie Raaz – The Mystery Continues (2008). The duo has composed music for several movies till date.
Known for: ‘Bheegi si bhaagi si’ (Raajneeti; 2010), ‘Saree ke fall sa’ (R... Rajkumar; 2013), ‘Gerua’ (Dilwale; 2015) and ‘Itni si baat hain’ (Azhar)
Journey so far: Antara was a contestant on Indian Idol 2 in 2005. She says she had to struggle to make inroads into Bollywood’s playback scene. “It took me five years to get my first big break. But, I guess that’s how things work in the industry. It takes time and that’s okay,” she adds.
Known for: ‘Madhubala’ (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan; 2011), ‘Balma’ (Khiladi 786; 2012), ‘Subhanallah’ (Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani; 2013) and ‘Aafreen’ (1920 London)
Journey so far: Sreeram was the winner of Indian Idol 5. He was also the finalist of Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star 2. Post that, he got multiple Bollywood playback offers. He sings in multiple Indian languages. He is also set to release his next single soon.
