I am not worried about being stereotyped, says singer Papon
Being typecast doesn’t worry singer Papon, who says he is not bothered about what the public thinks about him.
Many singers want to sing different kinds of songs for they fear being typecast in the film industry. Angarag Mahanta aKa Papon, however, isn’t one of them. The 40-year-old singer is not worried about public perception and insists he will not be dictated by anyone.
“You worry, when you are not sure about the distance you are going travel. I know my roots and I know, where exactly I fit in this space. So for me, things like being stereotyped are very are small things. These things won’t affect me. I know how I am going to be, what I am going to do,” he says.
He finds it tough to sing for films. “I have learnt so much while singing for Bollywood films. In the non-film music space, you have your own ideas and expression and you are free to say whatever you want. In films, you have to learn someone else’s aesthetics, while making sure that you are true to yourself. You get out of your comfort zone. It’s pretty tough,” says Papon whose recent Bollywood single, Labon Ka Karobaar for the upcoming film starring Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor has already crossed 50 lakh hits on YouTube.
However, apart from singing, Papon who is also a composer in the independent circuit, would love to compose for a film. “I am actually waiting for a day when a good project comes my way. I want to see what I do with a film and what kind of acceptance I get in that space as well,” he says.
