Photos: Heavy rain wreaks havoc across northern India, 49 killed in UP

Heavy rains led to waterlogging and traffic congestion in many parts of the country, compounding problems for commuters. Rain-related incidents claimed atleast 49 lives in Uttar Pradesh since Thursday. Whereas, Delhi recorded its second heaviest spell of monsoon rain this season, with a flood alert has been sounded by the Delhi government after the water level of the Yamuna crossed the danger mark. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast that intermittent showers are likely until till Sunday in the NCR although their intensity, distribution and duration will diminish as the weather systems that triggered the rain are weakening.

The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed senior officials of all districts to alert people and asked them to undertake extensive tours in the affected areas and identify dilapidated buildings, and get them vacated, a government spokesperson said.
