People express gratitude to ancestors on last day of Pitru Paksh | Pics

In Sanatan Dharma, Pitru Paksha month is observed to pay homage to one's ancestors, and remember their contribution in people's lives. It is believed that performing 'Shradh' and 'Pind Daan' during this period starting from Bhadrapada Purnima brings happiness, prosperity and peace in the family. The last day of Pitru Paksh is observed on Mahalaya which signifies the beginning of the festival of Dussehra. People express their gratitude to past generations by offering food and performing rituals in an effort to respect and thank them before breaking into festive mood of Navratri, Vijayadashmi, Diwali, Chhath etc in the coming days ahead.
