Another doctor assaulted in Pune: Lady gynaecologist attacked in Pimpri by female relatives of woman whose child was stillborn
Incident happened at Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital on Saturday morning
A female gynaecologist was assaulted by two female relatives of a 25-year-old woman from Maval taluka whose baby was stillborn at the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH), Pimpri, early morning Saturday.

The villagers, who were upset with the death, also created a pandemonium at the hospital, following which the doctors at the hospital went on mass leave.
According to the hospital administration, the patient, Nilima Upam (25) was admitted to YCM hospital on Friday for delivery and on Saturday, at around 1.30 am, she gave birth to a stillborn baby. Upset with this, two female members of the Upam family created a ruckus and tried to strangulate gynecologist Dr Priyanka Patil (26).
Dr Anil Deshmukh, superintendent of the 750-bed YCMH, said,“We tried our best but unfortunately because of stillbirth, we could not do anything. We lodged a police case at the Pimpri police station.”
After this incident, the resident doctors called for a strike demanding better security but after discussion with the hospital administration, withdrew their strike, Dr Deshmukh said.
Immediately after the incident, the police rushed to the hospital to file a case under the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Institutions (Prevention of Violence Or Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2010.
Dr Anil Roy, medical officer of PCMC’s health department, said,“The umbilical chord was wrapped around the throat of the baby which was not seen in sonography. After conveying the news of the stillbirth to the family, they became violent and assaulted the gynecologist,’’ he said.
Police inspector of Pimpri police station, VV Muglikar, said a case had been filed and investigations were in progress.
Less than a month ago, two other doctors were assaulted in Pune district. On September 19, a Pune doctor was attacked with a knife by a 75-year-old patient who was upset with his allegedly costly treatment while on September 9, a Pimple-Saudagar based gynecologist was attacked with sharp weapons for refusing to abort a foetus.
